Winbond Electronics is looking to raise prices for NOR flash memory by 5% to reflect tight capacity, while Macronix International Company (MXIC) may also follow suit, according to industry sources.
Escalating demand from the PC and consumer electronics sectors has tightened NOR flash supply, and the tight market is expected to extend into the second quarter, indicated the sources.
Winbond responded by saying that it is proposing a slight rise to NOR flash prices, and the degree of the increase may vary for different densities of the chip. Winbond offers NOR flash chips ranging in densities from 32Mb to 128Mb for PC, LCD TV, set-top box and hard drive applications.
Macronix has said the decision to raise NOR flash prices would depend on customer demand. The company also admitted its supply of the chip is really tight at present.
Both Winbond and Macronix have stepped up efforts to accelerate their process advancements for NOR flash memory. Winbond said it is scheduled to kick off pilot runs for chips built on 58nm later in 2010. The company also noted it is gearing up to convert all of its NOR chip production using 90nm, which is now its major process node.
Macronix was quoted in previous reports as saying it is looking to grow the proportion of its NOR flash products fabricated at 110nm-class nodes to 60-70% by year-end 2010.
